DESIGN AMENDMENTS - French Bureau Issues

by David Lamb

When the French Post Office distributes advance publicity for forthcoming issues it is usually with the proviso "photos non contractuelles", in other words the issued stamps may differ slightly from the artist's original design.

A number of such publicity illustrations from the period 1979-1981 have been seen which show variations ranging from quite minor to very significant.

1979 Nature - maquette 1979 Europa - maquette
1979 Nature - issued stamp 1. 1979 Nature protection
- "nature" in French instead
of Catalan "natura"
1979 Europa - issued stamp
2. 1979 Europa 1f20 -
Inscribed "ANDORRA"
instead of "PRINCIPAT
"DISSENY" written as
"DISSE/NY" joined
together with a stroke.
("Disseny"is an error
anyway, meaning "Design"
rather than "Distribution")
Monument - maquette 1981 Europa - maquette
Monument - issued stamp 3. 1979 CoPrinces Monument - Issued stamp shows
additional inscriptions in vertical side panels.
Casa de la Vall - maquette
4. 1980 Casa de la Vall - Inscribed "Casa de Vall" and "Centenari" etc.
instead of "Casa de la Vall" and "IV Centenari" etc. (Quite a difference!)
5. 1980 Europa 2fr - Shows only the name of J. DEPECH as designer and engraver
without acknowledgement to Sergi Mas on whose original design the stamp is based.
1981 Europa - issued stamp Casa de la Vall - issued stamp

With thanks to John West (France and Colonies P.S. for providing the material and to Ted Jewell for reproducing the illustrations.
