The Chapel of Sant Romà dels Vilars

by David Hope

Sant Romà dels Vilars

The chapel of Sant Romà dels Vilars is one of the more ancient Romanesque churches of Andorra. It was built in the Xth century and is situated in the Parish of Escaldes-Engordany, and stands below the Pic de Padern (1861m).

Originally, the building consisted of a narrow nave, 6.38m by 4.85m, in a form slightly trapizoidal. It is extended by a rectangular apse, narrower than the nave and at the end of which one can still see an altar. Two small windows, set in the blocks of stone on the south and east walls of the apse, permit daylight to enter. A side door opens on the south wall of the nave. The west wall was knocked down at some stage to allow the building to be lengthened, and to allow the addition of a platform in the interior part and a low porch for the exterior. The triumphal arch and the windows have been made with well-cut stone and pointed with lime. Despite restorations, the chapel still shows something of its original personality.
