Valira Torrent - bulletin of the Andorran Philatelic Study Circle. Issue 24, p6 (Oct 1986).
1985 was designated European Music year, and because of this the Europa issues illustrated this theme. Two aspects of music were chosen by the French Bureau, both connected with Andorra.
The 2f10 value depicts the musical score "Le Val d'Andorre". It was played in Paris for the first time on 11th November, 1848, on the stage of the Opera Comique. "Le Val d'Andorre" is a lyric drama in three acts with words by M. de Saint Georges. The music is by the composer Fromental Halevy, who has evidently treated the subject with a deep sensitivity, distinctive to his temperament.
The 3f value shows traditional musical instruments of Andorra. The Shepherd's pipe shown at the top of the stamp is a wind instrument giving very agreeable sounds. It is still used in the Andorran valleys. The viola, shown with its bow, is also still played in Andorra. Custom requires that the shepherds of the mountains play this instrument when, on Easter Sunday, they accompany singing bands of boys and girls who collect eggs and other delicacies from the people in their village.
